ISIS Counter Terrorist Operation Lacks Intelligence of Hostage Whereabouts

The British MI6 could not locate the whereabouts of Alan Henning and other hostages, making it difficult to mount a Special Forces Operation for their rescue. According to UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond “We don’t know where he is. Obviously, if we knew where he was, we would be able to look at all sorts of options, but we don’t know where he is.”

“We have considered every possible option to support these kidnap victims – both British and the others – and if we knew where they were, it would be a different story.”

According to Internationl Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Senior Fellow for Land Warfare Ben Barry, “hostage rescue, deep in enemy-held territory, is very difficult. This is a needle in haystack stuff.”

He said that the terrorists have been disciplined not to leave behind any electronic clues for the UK and US intelligence to identify the captives being held.

CIA’s Michael Scheuer said that the British-speaking “Jihadi John” is likely to be close to the hostages. Finding him was a clue to where the hostages may be located.

However, British officials said they were making progress identifying John’s identity. Jihadi John had appeared in the three videos where he was also the executioner of the three previous hostages, James Foley, Steven Sotloff and David Haines.
