UN Accuses Russia of Planning Ukraine Invasion in the Footsteps of Crimea

Western nations have accused Russia of amassing forces in preparation to invade Ukraine in a similar manner as it did Crimea. According to NATO satellite images, there are between 35,000 to 40,000 Russian soldiers in the Ukrainian border, including tanks, artillery and combat aircraft which NATO claims could move to invade any time the Russian government orders an attack.

The troops in the area are in addition to the 25,000 already placed in Crimea according to Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant.

Russia, including other 15 nations, are participating in an emergency meeting in the United Nations Security Council. According to Russian diplomats, Russia wanted the meeting to be a private meeting, but other nations insisted it be a public session.

Russia had also denounced the accusations of western countries

According to Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, Ukraine’s ultimatum against Russia is a result of its opposition to Russia as Russophobic hatred had become the norm in Ukraine’s parliament.

According to Kiev, Russia had directed the rebellions in Ukraine. US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power had said Russia was hiding its intent to invade Ukraine in a statement that it will protect all the Russian-speakers in Ukraine. Around half of the country speaks in Russian aside from their native language.
